Dr. Karen Maffei

Dr. Karen Maffei graduated Cum Laude from Emory University School of Medicine in 1989. She completed her residency in dermatology at Emory, training in Mohs surgery, procedural dermatology and general dermatology. Her training also included plastic surgery. She is a member of the American Society for Mohs Surgery, the American Society of Dermatologic Surgery and the American Board of Dermatology. She has been serving the Athens and Watkinsville areas for over 20 years.




Dr. Vincent J. Maffei, MD

Dr. Vincent J. Maffei attended medical school at Louisiana State University, graduating in 1980. He completed his general surgery residency at Louisiana State University in 1985 and completed his cardiovascular and thoracic surgery residency at Emory University in 1988. Dr. Maffei is Board certified in Cardiothoracic Surgery.


Dr. Maffei has been in private practice in Athens since 1992. He performed the first open heart surgery in Athens and was chief of cardiac surgery at Athens Regional Medical Center from 1992 to 2008. In addition to his work at The Vein Clinic At Athens Dermatology, he continues practicing thoracic surgery with Athens Thoracic and Vascular surgery in Watkinsville, Georgia.


Dr. Maffei brings the same level of expertise that he has achieved as a thoracic surgeon to his work with patients at The Vein Clinic At Athens Dermatology.

Meet Our Physician Assistant

Morgan Rains, PA-C

Morgan Rains, PA-C, is a native of Atlanta, Georgia. She received her Bachelor of Science degree graduating Magna Cum Laude from the University of Georgia and then earned a Master of Physician Assistant Studies graduating Summa Cum Laude from the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston. She is a NCCPA board certified Physician Assistant, as well as a member of the American Academy of Physician Assistants, the Society of Dermatology Physician Assistants, the Georgia Dermatology Physician Assistants and the Georgia Association of Physician Assistants. Additionally, she is an inductee of Alpha Eta National Honor Society and the Pi Alpha National Honor Society for Physician Assistants. She resides in Athens with her husband, who is also a PA, and young daughter, Margo.
